Audubon Achievements: Protecting the Health of
Humans
Audubon’s campaign to protect and
preserve our shared aquatic backyard, the Long Island Sound
and its surrounding watershed will demand a complex set of
scientific and legislative agendas. In addition, there are
many simple things each and every one of us can do today.
If each of us engages in organic and pesticide-free
landscaping of our own properties, conserves water, and assists
with open space protection, we will ensure the Sound is preserved
for future generations.
Our Audubon At Home program is designed
to give you the facts and the resources you need to make wise
decisions on what to purchase, bring into your home, and put
into your lawns and gardens. Armed with this information you
will be safeguarding the Sound, making our community more
bird friendly, and providing your family with the healthiest
home possible.
Our Audubon At Home program is especially
relevant to Connecticut because, according to statistics compiled
by the American Cancer Society in 2003, Connecticut holds
the dubious record for being the state with the highest incidence
of breast cancer in the nation. We are also the state with
the third highest rates of bladder and Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma
cancers in the nation.
Today, many people are taking a serious
look at the products they put into their lawns and yards,
realizing that what we spray, bury, or spread on our lawns
and flower beds is inevitably picked up, ingested, or absorbed
by our children, pets, and ourselves, with the runoff flowing
directly into the Sound or our drinking water reservoirs.
By joining the millions of people who are providing their
families with toxin-free backyards and homes, you will be
making the best choice for your family and the Sound while
building a healthier community overall.
Look on our Healthy
Yard Tips page, to find a lot of easy ways to begin the
process. And think about joining our Audubon At Home Committee
to get more involved. It’s easy – just contact
Karen Dixon via email,
or call 203-869-5272 to get started.
