Audubon Achievements
Conservation Implementation Audubon Connecticut’s science and policy team have
worked in three specific areas to protect and preserve the
open space, wildlife, and environmental health throughout
the Long Island Sound Estuary system and its surrounding watershed.
- Acquisition of significant wildlife
habitat – in 2008 alone Audubon helped raise over
$17.8 million dollars in public and private funds for acquisition
of more 777 acres in Connecticut and Massachusetts with
$12.7 million more pending to help in the acquisition of
165 additional acres.
- Advising local, state, and federal
entities on best practices in conservation through participation
in stewardship committees at local, state, and national
levels. Audubon staff either serve on or chair Committees
overseeing preservation of Connecticut’s forests,
grasslands, coastline, and Long Island Sound. Additionally
Audubon leads habitat stewardship with our landscape sized
Important Bird Area conservation plans. Currently 15 conservation
plans are completed, in process or being reviewed.
- Ensuring these plans and recommendations
come to fruition through education and activation of the
public giving them the knowledge and the means to adopt
and provide on-going local stewardship of key habitat areas.
Last year alone hundreds of adults and youth volunteered
at every level in our Important Bird Area efforts, citizen
science, and Audubon at Home programs. These efforts then
translate in positive public policy changes and lasting
habitat preservation.
